In several slums in the city we have a building which is open for all the children. The work there is done by our teachers in cooperation with our nurses and social workers.
The most remarkable problems which these children have are problems in reading, writing and in fine motor skills. Therefore our teachers support the youngest kids and stimulate them to overcome their deficits as fast as possible.
Beside that there are lots of children with poor personal hygiene, low self esteem and little self-confidence. That’s why we find it important not only to work with the children, but also involve their families.
Some of our children have a very large learning deficit. The causes of these deficits are often their problematic home situation or the fact that they have to work until late in the evening to help provide the family’s income.
Because of the big flow to our buildings for homework tutoring, our teachers didn’t have time left to help intensively the stragglers, children who sometimes have years of school deficit. Therefore Mama Alice started individual education in 2007. The children have a starting level which is far beneath the level which they should reach. Our goal is to get the participating children back on the normal class group level, so that they can continue their education in their schools.
For adolescents who come to our day care, we have teachers of mathematics, language & literature and natural sciences. In these courses our adolescents have the largest problems. Besides the homework tutoring they get training in study methods, comprehensive reading, analysing, etc.
We also spend attention to their self esteem. Just like with the younger children, we play creative games, organize birthday parties and give individual and positive attention.
