THE WORK OF MAMA ALICE

Mama Alice is a humanitarian aid organisation without links to religion, politics or philosophy. Our only belief is that street children, no matter where in the world, need to be helped. Every child has the right to be loved and protected.

Approach to major social problems

Our first project is already running for five years in Ayacucho. Ayacucho, a city situated in the Peruvian Andes, is the capital city of the Huamanga Province. The city is situated in the south of Peru at 570 kilometres from the capital Lima. Ayacucho is one of the cities which were hit very hard by the terror of the Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso) in the eighties. This time of chaos and violence has clearly left its traces within the population of Ayacucho, who carries until today large traumas with itself. Ayacucho is a city with a big economic delay and lots of social problems such as alcohol abuse, domestic violence and unemployment.

800 street  children on their way to a better future

Our work in Ayacucho consists of offering free day care to children between 4 and 18 years old in which our three core principles ‘Education’, ‘Well-being and Care’ and ‘Vocational training’ are crucial. Hereby we try to give street children a life with more opportunities and a better future. Through our unique, small-scaled and tangible working method, the amount of children making use of this help has increased to 800.
